Replacing NiCd rechargeables with NiMH rechargeable batteries in solar lights, the better choice!
Many people have asked "can I use NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries in my solar lights that have NiCd (Nickel Cadmium)?"  And the answer is, yes!  Not only can you replace with NiMH, but they are the better choice of battery as they have benefits that their NiCd counterparts don't. Just remember, don't mix the chemistries in your solar lights (if they take 2 or more batteries). Use on...
The light wave of the future, switching to LEDs and what it means for cities.
You've seen them. Maybe you didn't know exactly what they were, but you've seen them. You're driving along, listening to the latest Depeche Mode remix, and you notice that those street lights are different than what you remember from a decade ago. Yes, street lights are going LED (Light Emitting Diode). Some are going induction or halogen, but the point to make here is that they have been going aw...
Australia is at it again, making the most out of solar design while conserving water!
One of the points made by solar opposition is the intrusion of installations on existing ecosystems. For example, desert installations in the US are often subject to EIRs (Environmental Impact Reports) that may make or break a project. Albeit, this is done for good reasons and with the right intent for all involved (human and non-human). So, designers in Australia have come up with a solution that...
Spring cleaning includes Spring upgrades …. time to replace those batteries in your solar garden lights!
As we approach the Spring months of longer sunny days, fresh strawberries and cleaning up around the house, we also are upgrading our landscaping. This includes changing out those old batteries in the solar lights around the house and in the garden. Remember to recycle your old rechargeable batteries at your local facilities. Some big box stores accept them (check with their customer servic...
MIT researchers claim to have created a 24/7 solar power system.
Researchers at MIT claim to have developed a liquid catalyst system combined with solar (photovoltaic) cells that will generate renewable energy 24/7. "A liquid catalyst was added to water before electrolysis to achieve what the researchers claim is almost 100-percent efficiency. When combined with photovoltaic cells to store energy chemically, the resulting solar energy systems could generate ele...

Nanoparticle “inks” may soon replace the conventional solar panel systems we see on rooftops
and empty fields. University of Texas engineers hope to cut costs to 1/10th of the current manufacturing process for solar cells. The current solar cell production procedure makes it difficult
for the industry to break past the competition (fossil fuels). But with the efforts and advancements
in nanotechnology, the photovoltaic industry may soon enough find itself in the forefront of world energy production.

Researchers apply the nanoparticle “inks” as a spray on the solar cells.
